Why convert AVIF to PNG
AVIF was designed for delivering images on the web, where small files matter most. Once you download one, you may find that your editing software, presentation app or print workflow does not recognise it. PNG has been readable by practically every program for decades, which makes it the safe container for an image you still plan to work on.
PNG is also the format people reach for when a picture has a cut-out shape: a logo, a product shot on a clear background, a sticker or an icon. Converting AVIF to PNG keeps that clear background, whereas a JPG would fill it with a solid color.
Lossless output, and what that really means
Lossless describes the step from AVIF to PNG, not the history of the image. Most AVIF files were compressed with some loss when they were created, and nothing can bring back detail that was discarded then. What the PNG guarantees is that the pixels your browser decoded from the AVIF are written out exactly, with no second round of compression on top.
That matters if you edit the image repeatedly. Each save of a JPG compresses it again and small errors pile up, while a PNG can be opened, changed and saved many times without drifting. Keep your working copy as PNG and export a JPG or AVIF only when the final version is ready.
Transparent backgrounds stay transparent
AVIF stores transparency in an alpha channel, and PNG does the same, so fully clear areas remain clear and soft edges keep their gradual fade. Hair around a portrait cut-out, the glow behind an icon and the anti-aliased rim of a logo all survive the conversion.
When you place the PNG on a slide or a colored web page, the background shows through exactly where it did in the AVIF. Image viewers usually draw a checkerboard or a plain color behind transparent pixels; that is only how they display the empty area, not something stored in the file.
Why the PNG is bigger than the AVIF
Expect the PNG to be several times larger than the AVIF, especially for photographs. A lossless format has to record every pixel faithfully, while AVIF was free to simplify detail the eye barely notices. For photos a jump of five to ten times is common; for logos, screenshots and flat illustrations the difference is much smaller, because PNG compresses large areas of solid color well.
If the size is a problem and the image has no transparency, a JPG is usually the better destination. If you need the transparency but a smaller file, run the PNG through a lossless PNG optimizer afterwards, which can often trim it further without changing a pixel.
Color depth, HDR and color profiles
Browsers write PNG files with 8 bits for each of the red, green, blue and alpha channels. Many AVIF images use exactly that, so nothing changes. Some carry 10-bit or 12-bit color, or HDR brightness, and those are reduced to standard 8-bit color when the browser draws them, which can clip the very brightest highlights.
Colors are converted to sRGB, the default for almost every app and display, so the PNG looks the same everywhere you open it. Embedded metadata such as camera details or location is not copied into the new file.
How to convert AVIF to PNG in batches
