Why convert JPG to PNG
Every time a JPG is edited and saved, it is compressed again, and small errors build up into blur and blotches. Converting to PNG before you start editing stops that cycle: a PNG can be opened, changed and saved as often as you like without losing anything further.
Some destinations also insist on PNG. App icon templates, sticker packs, certain design and printing workflows and a number of upload forms list PNG as the only accepted format. Converting JPG to PNG gets the file through without changing how it looks.
What converting does not do
A PNG made from a JPG looks exactly like the JPG. It cannot restore detail the JPG compression already discarded, and it will not remove blocky artifacts that are already there. The benefit is that no new loss is added from this point on.

PNG does not make the background transparent
This is the most common misunderstanding. PNG supports transparency, but a JPG has none to carry over, so its white or colored background remains solid after conversion. Renaming or re-saving cannot know which pixels were meant to disappear.

File size after converting JPG to PNG
Expect the PNG to be two to ten times larger than the JPG. Lossless encoding has to reproduce every pixel exactly, including the noise and faint compression patterns hidden in a photo, and that takes far more data than the JPG needed.
For photographs you only want to share, stay with JPG. Convert to PNG when losslessness or a PNG requirement matters more than the extra megabytes.
Orientation and metadata
Phone cameras often store pictures sideways and add a note telling viewers how to rotate them. Your browser applies that note while decoding, so the PNG comes out upright and stays upright in every app, including those that ignore the note.
The PNG does not include the JPG metadata. Camera details, capture time and any GPS location are left behind, which is useful before you publish a photo online. Keep the original JPG if you need that information.
Common reasons a site asks for PNG
Print-on-demand shops often expect artwork as PNG, app and browser extension stores ask for PNG icons, and presentation or document templates sometimes accept only PNG placeholders. Some school and office portals simply list PNG first and reject anything else.
In each case the content can stay exactly as it is; the destination only needs the right container. Converting JPG to PNG takes care of that in seconds and leaves the picture untouched.
An editing workflow that starts from JPG
Convert the JPG to PNG once, at the start. Do all your cropping, retouching, text and layout work on the PNG, saving as often as you like. When the image is finished, export a JPG or WebP for delivery and keep the PNG as your master copy.
Following that order means the picture is compressed with loss only twice in its life: once when the camera or website first saved it, and once when you deliver the final version. Every intermediate save costs nothing.
PNG compression levels and file size
PNG compression is always lossless, so a higher compression level never changes the picture, only how long the encoder spends and how small the file ends up. Browsers use a standard level that balances speed and size well.

Screenshots that were saved as JPG
Some apps and phones save screenshots as JPG, which adds faint smudges around text. Converting such a file to PNG freezes it in its current state; it will not get worse, but the smudges stay. When text clarity matters, take the screenshot again and save it as PNG from the start.
